Everyday women are silenced in more ways than most of us, as a general public, are aware of. Things like cat calling, being held to standards of commercialized beauty, being shamed for our femininity, and victim blaming are detrimental to girls and women of all ages. Often, as women, we tear each other down instead of lifting each other up, thus creating a culture of hate. We fail to see the beauty, strength, and potential in one another and as a result continue the cycle of silence. As a whole, we blame society. We say that society feeds us these negative ideals and values. To some extent, this is true, but what we fail to recognize is the fact that WE are society. WE choose. And WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED.
Six months ago today, nearly 300 Nigerian school girls were kidnapped in the middle of the night. Well over 200 are still missing and being sold into sex slavery. The Nigerian government has done next to nothing in efforts to rescue them. Women are being silenced in huge ways globally and it is well past time to put an end to it.
We Will Not Be Silenced is a photo campaign that will run from Oct. 15, 2014 to Oct. 14, 2015, a new photo being released everyday. Our goal is to bring awareness to the ways in which women are silenced and offer comfort to women who have experienced this silence. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments you may have at projectwewillnotbesilenced@gmail.com.
Will you stand with us in this campaign against women's silence? Will YOU be silent? #nosilence
