Day 77

Often, as women, we tear each other down instead of lifting each other up, thus creating a culture of hate. We fail to see the beauty, strength, and potential in one another and as a result continue the cycle of silence. As a whole, we blame society. We say that society feeds us these negative ideals and values. To some extent, this is true, but what we fail to see is the fact that WE are society. WE choose. And WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED.

Day 36

"Women are often advised to avoid sexual violence by never walking alone at night. But in fact, only around 10% of rapes are committed by 'strangers'. Around 90% of rapes are committed by known men; someone who the survivor has previously known, trusted, often even loved. People are raped in their homes, their workplaces and other settings where they have previously felt safe. Sometimes, the myth that rape is most commonly perpetrated by strangers can make the majority of survivors, who have been raped or sexually assaulted by someone they know, even less likely to report to the police or even confide in someone close about their experiences, for fear of not being believed, out of a sense of shame or self-blame, and/or because they have mixed feelings about getting the perpetrator 'into trouble'. This myth can also control women's movements and restrict their rights and freedom." (www.rapecrisis.org.uk)

Day 32

I will not stay SILENT so you can stay COMFORTABLE.

Thank you for supporting us and following the first month of our year long journey. In this past month, statistically, 56,916 U.S. women were raped, 154 girls were victims of human trafficking in the U.S., and countless women were victims of street harassment and were made to feel ashamed of being female. When will we wake up and stop this abuse? What will it take for us to raise our voices? This could have been your grandmother, your mother, your sister, your daughter, your friend. This could have been you. Will you be silent?
